Abstract:Towns and cities that facilitate walking encourage healthier lifestyles, support greater employment, achieve lower carbon footprints and
generate higher land values. Designing, financing and delivering walkable environments can be facilitated by urban design principles
and digital mapping tools. Key features of walkability include sufficient density, spatial connectivity and land use diversity. A ‘Walkability
score’ allows existing places to be measured and new design proposals to be assessed in terms of likely levels of walkability.
