ZHOU Jingyan
FORM
The Mangkang salt terraces have a history of 1300 years,
and it is the only site where still retains
the original handmade salt technique.
The salt terrances are constructed of wood,
and the surface is covered with red clay or fine sand.
The brine from the wells on the riverside
is poured into the brine pond to be concentrated,
and then air-dried on the salt terrace to form salt.
SPACE
The ancient salt terraces were built
against the mountains,
and the high-concentration salt water
clearly reflected the sky.
When entering the village,
you can see the cascading salt fields
like land artwork placed on both sides of the river valley.
LOCATION
The salt terraces are located on the banks of the Lancang River
in Yanjing Town, Mangkang, Changdu, Tibet, China.
