In this paper, it is argued that space syntax is not only a set of techniques for analyzing architectural and urban space and foreseeing functional outcomes: it is a theoretical model of how human space is structured, and how it reflects society. Part of the theoretical model is a theory of the city as a spatial system. The space syntax theory of the city, and how it reflects society, is explained, and some applications to urban design and planning reviewed.
