Abstract:Gaodang is a Buyi village located in the karst mountainous region of Zhenning Buyi Miao Autonomous County,
Guizhou Province. The village has been recognized as a National Traditional Village, listed in the second batch. Since
2015, the team of School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, together with the Anshun Architectural Design Institute,
has been innovatively establishing a way of in-situ design, focused on preserving and renewing the village. Over a
period of seven years, collaborated with the local government, villagers, relevant enterprises and cooperatives, as well
as experts and scholars, we tried to form a village co-creation group. The group devised a comprehensive five-step
working methodology, including “investigation and research”, “cohesion and recognition”, “planning and consultation”,
“construction and implementation”, and “feedback and adjustment”. Through a mechanism of “joint participation”, “joint
planning”, “joint construction”, “joint sharing” and “joint governance”, the co-creation group executed an in-situ rural
design project that preserved the village’s overall spatial arrangement, improved the quality of traditional dwellings, and
reshaped a series of cultural spaces with the characteristics of the village.
