Abstract：China’s urban development is faced with many challenges in the new era, and people’s growing yearning for a better life
in material and spirit has put forward higher requirements for the quality of urban space. It is urgent to train a group of
urban design professionals with high political, economic, and cultural literacy. Although urban design has been a research
field for a long time, there is still a shortage of specialized talents for urban fine design at different levels, scales, and
requirements. In 2020, Tongji University was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish the first undergraduate
major in urban design in China. Based on the specific national conditions and major social needs of China’s urban
construction, it has established a talent training system for urban design major, especially the core curriculum system of
the major, which has been explored and practiced. In the system design of the core link of the professional training system,
a step-by-step ability training system is constructed according to the thinking mode and workflow characteristics of urban
design professional work. In the teaching plan design of specific courses, the design course system from space to type,
from elements to system is constructed. In the concrete teaching plan and teaching process, concrete teaching methods such
as theoretical learning, form design training, and cooperation are constructed. It is a pathfinding experiment for the training
of urban design professionals in domestic colleges and universities and also provides a reference for the construction of
urban design major.
