Abstract:Design Basic is an introductory and guiding course for urban design major. It plays an important role in the formation
of students’ values and the establishment of methodology. As for “traditional knowledge-based” freshmen, how to
establish appropriate teaching programs to cultivate their research awareness and innovation ability is a key issue to be
considered in professional teaching. Starting from the conceptual origin of design, this paper focuses on two cores of
basic education – space enlightenment and expression basic training, and constructs a space design methodology with
four dimensions of “observation, listening, questioning and sensing”. On this basis, it forms a basic design curriculum
system for freshmen with the theme of “in campus” and introduces the process of teaching plan formulation and
teaching practice in combination with the topic “With whom shall I sit: Kiosk+” in Design Basic II.
