Abstract:The renewal of old communities is an important part of the current urban stock development stage in China, an
important work to integrate into the new development pattern, and an important starting point for implementing
innovative grass-roots governance. Community public space is the key research object of micro renewal of old
communities. From the perspective of social governance, this study takes small and micro space as an example to
systematically explore the design and governance of micro renewal of public space in old communities from the aspects
of old urban communities and old residential areas. Different from the previous large investment and comprehensive
renovation of old communities, the micro renovation design of public space in old communities, which focuses on small
and micro spaces, emphasizes starting small, taking social governance as the perspective, taking small sites as anchor
points, leveraging the overall situation locally, and gradually micro renovation of old communities. Relevant research
can, to a certain extent, provide reference for the renewal of old communities in China, improve residents’ sense of
community and belonging, and promote the renewal governance and refinement of old communities in China.
