Reflection on the Construction of Outdoor Spaces for the Elderly in
the Old Bungalow Residential Area of Beijing’s Core Area:
Taking the Chongwai No.6 Area as an Example
Abstract:The paper focuses on the aging-adaptive renovation of the outdoor environment for the elderly in the old bungalow
residential area of Beijing’s core area and proposes that the aging-adaptive renovation should go in the same direction
as urban renewal. Taking the Chongwai No.6 Area in the Dongcheng District as an example, the paper first conducted
a relatively comprehensive observation and investigation on the living conditions, quality of life, and psychological
state of the elderly residents, and summarized the characteristics of the low-income elderly groups. Through the grasp
of the overall condition of the buildings, it is found that the aging conditions of indoor both in the elderly’s own houses
and care facilities cannot meet their daily needs, and the outdoor environment has become the main space for their
activities. Through the in-depth investigation into the elderly residents’ behaviors in outdoor spaces, the connotation
and scope of the implementation-oriented outdoor “support space for the elderly” in the old bungalow residential area
are explored, the issues why space supports and does not support outdoor activities of the elderly residents are found,
and the construction principles and methods are summarized to provide a reference for the renovation and improvement
of the outdoor environment in the old bungalow residential area.
