Various Possibilities of Transforming the Large-scale Space:
Teaching Experiment of Reconstructing the “One Axis and Four Pavilions”
Area of the Shanghai World Expo 2010
Abstract:In the 2023 graduation design of Tongji University, the One Axis and Four Pavilions area of the Shanghai World
Expo 2010 is taken as the object. Through densification, the area can be reconstituted and thereby, an exploration of
daily life is replenished based on large-scale space. Using the morpho-typological operation tool and aiming to solve
the spatial problems, such as scale imbalance and vitality deficiency, the experiment is implemented on three levels:
spatial structure, urban blocks, and architectural design. Through three proposals of Grids, Market in Neighborhood,
and Collage of Types, various possibilities of transforming the area are explored in order to create a diverse space with
friendly scale and mixed functions, making it from a passive space controlled by large-scale buildings into an urban
district of high density, high diversity, and daily life.
