Abstract:This study employs multi-source data to conduct an in-depth analysis of the urban center system in central Shenyang
from various perspectives. (1) We identify the urban center system from various perspectives including function,
population, development intensity, and special elements. (2) We identify urban centers based on the distribution of
six types of elements: business services, financial services, public services, leisure and recreation, living services, and
residential function. The results show that Shenyang has formed a polycentric spatial structure, with the planned “Golden
Corridor, Silver Ribbon” and “One Main Center and Four Subcenters” spatial framework essentially established. The
Hunbei main urban area, as the traditional core, still holds a high status, while the Hunnan main urban area and several
subcenters are relatively lagging in development level. The polycentric structure is realized mainly through large-scale
real estate development and the relocation of government public service functions. Business, financial, and leisure
and recreation functions are mainly concentrated in the main urban area, while public services, living services, and
residential centers show a clear trend of expansion toward the periphery.
