Abstract:This article takes Tiexi District in Shenyang as an example to explore how urban design drives the renaissance of
old industrial areas. As an important witness of China’s modern industrial development, Tiexi District carries rich
industrial cultural heritage and urban memory. The Urban Renaissance Plan for Old Urban Area of Tiexi District aims
to comprehensively enhance the 5 major systems of industrial economy, social vitality, cultural heritage, green ecology,
and resilient wisdom through urban design methods. The flagship project with the Industrial Museum of China as the
core development area is the key to the urban renaissance of the old urban area in Tiexi District. This project aims to
create a demonstration zone for an internationalized and future-oriented center city in Northeast Asia by revitalizing
industrial heritage, introducing new business models, and constructing a three-dimensional spatial network. In addition,
it also includes multiple key projects such as the renovation and upgrading of Xinghua South Street commercial district
and Labor Park and the protection and renewal of historical buildings in Workers’ Village, which jointly promote the
comprehensive renaissance of the old urban area of Tiexi. The urban renaissance action follows the “4-step plan” and
ensures the smooth progress of the project through mechanisms. These measures will help revitalize the old urban area
of Tiexi and realize the beautiful vision of urban renaissance.
