Abstract:Urban development has entered the era of stock-based urban regeneration in China, and historic preservation has
consequently entered a new stage of development. Facing new challenges including the increasing diversity of cultural
heritage properties, growing demands for interdisciplinary integration, and higher requirements for the integrity and
precision of preservation practices, preservation planning must fully integrate historic preservation with urban design.
Anchored in a values-oriented perspective, this article proposes how to apply urban design methods in preservation
planning at different spatial scales, specifically in terms of identifying design strategies and leveraging the transmission
role of design guidelines. Through case studies such as the Preservation Planning of the Historic City of Langzhong,
the Preservation and Regeneration Planning of the Shanan Historical and Cultural District in Zhoukou, and the design
of the Zhoukou Federation of Trade Unions Building, this article explores the application of urban design methods in
historic preservation at different scales and levels.
