Abstract:The undergraduate graduation project of Tongji University in 2024 focuses on the Yinhang Road and surrounding areas
in Shanghai New Jiangwan City. Adopting “reshaping cell walls”, a teaching experiment is conducted to transform
“roads” into “alleys” in response to the lack of vitality in urban spaces in China’s new residential areas. Based on
the concept of urban cells and using densification as a tool, the experiment realizes structural reshaping and street
construction and creates diverse urban street space with clear shape, friendly scale, and mixed functions. The two spatial
models of “street-side courtyard” and “sky pavilion” inject daily life in modern residential islands, and also provide
reference for China’s new cities’ renovation.
