Abstract:Guangzhou is an outstanding representative of the combination of the ancient concept of city building and the special
natural geography and context of Lingnan. Its urban site selection, environmental integration, and spatial fabric reflect
the construction philosophy of “harmony between human and nature” and site-specific planning. These ideas and
concepts have created Guangzhou into a rare historical city with a thousand-year-old urban site that remains unchanged,
and have also proved the scientificity and rationality of the traditional Chinese concept of Shan-shui Urbanism. This
philosophy represents the essence of traditional Chinese culture and crystallizes collective wisdom. Combined with the
multi-scale urban planning and design practice of Guangzhou in recent years, this paper explores how to decode and
innovate the ancient wisdom of landscape-based urban construction in the new period of increasing emphasis on the
construction of ecological civilization. It further proposes strategies to protect, inherit, and revitalize such wisdom in the
conservation and renewal of urban-rural historic and cultural heritage, thereby ensuring the sustainable perpetuation and
dynamic regeneration of the city’s cultural roots.
