Abstract:As China’s urbanization transitions from extensive expansion to intensive development, urban identity has become an
important issue in current stage. Structural urban design, as one kind of “comprehensive” urban design at the city or
large-scale urban district level, should play an important role in identifying and sustaining urban identity. Taking the
project in Jiangnan District of Quanzhou as an example, this paper discusses the methods of identifying and sustaining
the local urban identities in the structural urban design. By studying the urban morphology of road networks, water
systems, and community structures, the paper summarizes the urban identities of Jiangnan District of Quanzhou, and
then proposes the design strategy to sustain the local urban identities, so as to construct spatial structural frameworks
for rational urban regeneration in the future.
