Study on the Protection and Renewal Path of Industrial Heritage
from the Perspective of Conjugate Balance:
A Case Study of Hangzhou West Lake Ore Powder Factory Renovation
Abstract：Under the background of urban renewal, China’s land use planning is transforming from “incremental expansion” to
“stock activation”. The revitalization and renewal of industrial heritage, as urban stock land, is of great significance to
the sustainable development of cities. Taking the renovation and transformation of the West Lake Ore Powder Factory
in Hangzhou as an example, combined with the current research status of industrial heritage in China, this study
introduces the connotation of “conjugate theory” and re-explores the internal logic of the protection and development of
industrial heritage from the perspective of conjugate balance. A protection and development framework for promoting
organic renewal through the endogenous balance of industrial heritage is constructed. Four conjugate paths of internal
contradiction elements in the protection and development of industrial heritage are sorted out: cultural conjugation
of history and modernity, functional conjugation of production and life, architectural conjugation of old and new, and
population conjugation of local and non-local residents. Through the renovation and transformation design of the West
Lake Ore Powder Factory, an endogenous balance strategy of industrial heritage integrating culture, function, space,
and population is formed, with the aim of providing methods for the symbiotic model of protecting industrial heritage
and the coordinated development of urban renewal.
