Abstract:During China’s “First Five-Year Plan” period, industrial cities like Shanghai, Wuhan and others followed the example of the Soviet Union in building living quarters for workers. And with the end of the planned economy and system of units, most of the living quarters for workers have been on the decline. How to protect and reuse this type of areas has become an important issue in the renewal and transformation of traditional industrial cities. Therefore, this paper examines the practices within the urban design of No.5, 6 neighborhood in Red Steel City of Qingshan District in Wuhan, analyzes the diverse connotations of the city’s “Cultural Landmark”. Through these methods, this paper put forward targeted renewal strategies from four perspectives based on the principles of “Conservation of Authenticity”,“Publicity”, “Landmark Construction” and “Daily Life Orientated”, aiming to promote the transformations of the old living quarters for workers of No.5, 6 neighborhoods in Red Steel City to a special cultural and creative district.
