Understanding Urban Changes Through Space Syntax: The Case of Lisbon
Teresa V. Heitor, João Pinelo Silva
Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of space syntax methodology to explore urban changes through time and to identify generic "rules" of urban growth and emergent properties of urban form, using the city of Lisbon as case study. Based on the visual inspection of a set of eight axial maps which have been redrawn from cartographic maps published from 1785 up to 2017, the paper traces a broad picture of the evolution of the urban form and characterizes the generic spatial structure of the city of Lisbon.
