Exploring the Frontiers of Space: Bill Hillier (1937–2019)

Abstract:In this article, Alan Penn pays tribute to Bill Hillier (1937-2019), who was the original pioneer of the methods for the analysis of spatial patterns known as 'space syntax'. An intellectual giant, Bill established space syntax as a field of science that combines theoretical exploration with planning and design practice. Alan describes the historic evolution of space syntax and Bill's contribution to the fields of architecture and urban planning.
