Abstract:New China’s film studios constituted an integral part of the nation’s industrial system. Having witnessed the evolutionary process of the film industry and the development of factory compounds amid the nationalization drive in the early years of the People’s Republic of China and the marketization reform and opening-up drive, they hold profound historical value and contemporary significance, and are confronted with a sustained demand for regeneration. Taking the Emei Film Studio as a case study, this paper systematically analyzes the regeneration context for elevating its functional and spatial efficiency on the basis of its well-preserved historical features, the synergistic regeneration approach for the integration of its spatial and functional patterns, as well as the regeneration mechanism aligned with the organizational system of state-owned enterprises. It provides detailed information on the factory compound regeneration of the Emei Film Studio, and argues for the importance of developing a systematic understanding of the historical value of New China’s historical factory compounds and strengthening the unique cultural value of these compounds through targeted design and conservation practices.
