Feng Xuan
Abstract:Workers’ new villages are a unique type of residential community with Chinese characteristics, reflecting the history of industrialization in the People’s Republic of China. As one of the first workers’ new villages in Shanghai, the construction and development history of Caoyang New Village prominently reflects the changes in the city’s development. Its historical significance should be studied from multiple aspects such as urban space, urban society and urban life. As a modern heritage, the protection and renewal of Caoyang New Village provide positive references and inspirations for the protection strategies of workers’ new villages.
